Ai Group has released its new Guidelines for Preventing Manual Task Injuries in Manufacturing, developed on behalf of the South Australian Manufacturing Occupational Health Safety and Welfare (OHSW) Industry Committee with funding from Employers Mutual, and project management by the Engineering
Employers Association (EEASA). During the project, EEASA became a part of the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group).
Workers compensation statistics in South Australia have shown the Manufacturing Industry accounted for:
» 26% of all claims for the state, and
» 22.5% of the cost of all claims, (2006/07).
The statistics also showed:
» 50% of all claims within the manufacturing industry were classified as strains and sprains or musculoskeletal injuries
» 58% of the lost time claims for males were due to strains, sprains or musculoskeletal injuries
» 72% of the lost time claims for women were due to strains, sprains or musculoskeletal injuries.
These guidelines provide assistance to workplaces to effectively address hazardous manual tasks. The ultimate goal is to reduce the number and severity of injuries from manual tasks in individual workplaces and the manufacturing industry as a whole.
