Self insurers dominated this year's Safe Work Awards, with wins in all categories for which they were eligible. SISA extends its warmest congratulations to the winners:

Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System - Santos Ltd
Santos has made a considerable effort to ensure that health and safety is afforded a high priority in the daily work programmes across all of its sites. Its integrated and systematic safety approach has resulted in workplace injuries falling by 45% and the severity of injuries down by 80% since it sharpened its focus on effective safety management.

Best Solution to an Identified Workplace Health and Safety Issue - OneSteel ‘Tipping Hook Stand’.
The BOS Shift 2 at OneSteel’s Whyalla plant developed a portable stand that allows crane operators to accurately position their machine’s 150-kilo hook into a 55-kilo loading shackle, without risking any other workers’ safety whatsoever during the procedure.

Employer of the Year – joint winners: Hardy Wine Company and Santos Limited
Hardy Wine Company’s effective engagement of its workers in its safety management process greatly impressed the judges, while Santos made substantial progress in developing and implementing detailed and sophisticated safety management systems given the hazardous and demanding nature of its work environments.

Employee of the Year - Veronica Wilkey TafeSA
Ms. Wilkey has taken a lead role in developing and implementing TAFE SA Regional’s Occupational Health and Safety and Injury Management Plans, providing valuable advice in relation to their application in a teaching environment. Ms. Wilkey, who is a senior OHS and injury management consultant, works across 48 regional campuses including those on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankuntjatjara Lands.

Health and Safety Representative of the Year - Wayne McCoy, GM Holden Ltd

During his nine years with Holden, Wayne McCoy has earned the respect of his peers and management. He has personally instigated systems to safely manage maintenance and emergency situations, audit large dies of up to 30-tonnes in weight, and assess sprains and strains incurred by workmates on-the-job.

Best Public Event Safety - The Twilight Christmas Parade: City of Port Adelaide Enfield.
With more than 15,000 spectators and 1200 participants, the City of Port Adelaide Enfield’s annual  twilight Christmas Parade featured an innovative and consultative approach to ensuring the safety of all concerned, while also minimising street disturbance.
